Prosthodontics is the branch of Dentistry specialized in oral rehabilitation, promoting alternative solutions to natural teeth after their loss. Whatever the situation, it is always advisable to study oral rehabilitation as early as possible, as the solutions tend to be more complex and expensive over time.

At Nova Dentismed dental clinics, in Lisbon, we have dentists specialized in Prosthodontics who will be able to indicate the solution for your specific case, as well as explain the advantages and disadvantages of each solution.

Most common problems in Prosthodontics

The most common problems are those related to the partial or total loss of one or more teeth that bring a whole set of other associated problems, of an aesthetic, functional nature and even physical and psychological health.

These changes, which tend to increase over time, may make it difficult to find a good alternative to natural teeth, so it is recommended that you consult a dentist as soon as a tooth or teeth are lost.

Types of dentures

Removable dental prosthesis

This type of dental prosthesis rests on the gum or, in some cases, on the teeth or implants and can be removed for sleeping and cleaning.

Acrylic Removable Dental Prosthesis

It is called a "plate" or "denture" and is generally used by people with few or no teeth. It is a more economical solution but potentially less practical and comfortable.

Skeletal Removable Dental Prosthesis

This type of denture has a metal base, which makes it a little more resistant than acrylic dentures.

Removable dental prosthesis on implants

This solution makes it possible to fix the prosthesis on dental implants, increasing its stability and comfort.

Fixed dental prosthesis

Fixed dental prostheses, as the name implies, cannot be removed, they are permanently fixed to teeth or implants.

Crowns are used to replace the visible part of a tooth that, due to decay or fracture, no longer exists. They are produced in a prosthetic laboratory from molds and cemented into the root of the tooth.

A bridge is a fixed dental prosthesis on teeth or implants, replacing the absence of one or more teeth.
