Odontogeriatrics is the field of dentistry that is dedicated to the prevention and treatment of oral diseases of the highest age group.
With advancing age, the body undergoes several changes and the mouth is no exception. These changes may occur at the teeth, gums, saliva and / or bone.
Some examples are:
- Change in the color of the teeth;
- Decrease in the amount of saliva produced, often enhanced by taking medications. Saliva is fundamental for the protection of the oral tissues, preventing the demineralization of the teeth;
- Reduction of taste capacity, which may contribute to higher consumption of spices such as salt or sugar, aggravating problems such as diabetes or high blood pressure;
- Thin and sensitive gums that can lead to gingival retraction and / or mobility and tooth loss.
